The Honda FourTrax 300 (also known as the Honda TRX300) took the ATV market by storm. Sporting a 300cc engine and a four-wheel drive system, it was quickly recognized as one of the best machines on the market for off-roading. 

The Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 is an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and was one of the first ATVs to have a four-speed transmission. Unsurprisingly, it is still one of the most popular ATVs on the market. Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 Background

The Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 is perfect for utility work and recreation.

The ATV weighs 474 lbs/215 Kg, has a ground clearance of 220mm, and an overall length of 2,190mm.

Honda has rated its engine power at 12.33bhp or 9.66kW a 7600rpm and its braking system performance at 7.1/8.4mkg with front/rear drums (The brakes are operated by a foot pedal and hand lever on the right side of the handlebars).

With the benefit of an ATV, the FourTrax immediately became a hit with the off-roading community and the general public.

FourTrax 300 has been in the market for a while and is a best-seller among off-roaders. It indeed had great skill at handling rugged terrains, but some experts argued that it lacked in power. To prove them wrong, Honda introduced the upgraded version of this model – the Honda Foreman 400.

The Honda FourTrax 300 is a lightweight, versatile ATV that is perfect for all-purpose trail riding. With only 474 pounds, the FourTrax 300 can be carried easily to and from the trailhead. 

The engine delivers a lot of power with its 4-stroke, 286cc liquid-cooled engine. The FourTrax 300 has a fuel capacity of 3 gallons, providing you with plenty of riding time. It also comes equipped with an electric starter and Honda’s Automatic Dual Range Transmission (DTR).

Engine 

The Honda FourTraxs engine is a four-stroke engine that produces 150 HP. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a transfer case that distributes power to both axles. The engine uses a carburetor and a fuel injection system.

The FourTrax engine is located in the center of the vehicle and is surrounded by a radiator, oil cooler, and air filter.

The 300 has top speeds of 34 mph for 1/4 mile, 13 mph for water crossing, and 30, 45, and 60 mph for mud, sand, and rough terrain hill climbing, respectively. 

It retains its power when temperatures drop as low as 14 degrees and can withstand terrains from hardwood forests to deserts. With a specially designed system that allows you to use two-stroke oil instead of engine oil, it lets you enjoy your off-roading adventures without worry and hassle-free.

Drivetrain

The Honda FourTrax drive train consists of a front and rear differential and a transfer case. The transfer case distributes power to the front and rear wheels. 

The front differential connects the front axle to the engine, while the rear differential connects the rear axle to the engine. The transfer case is located between the front and rear axles.

The Honda 300 4×4 features a wide range of engine performance modifications designed to increase the torque and horsepower. Latest technologies in its construction have enabled it to carry a large volume of cooling air, thus enabling it to withstand greater performance loads on hard terrain.

Suspension

For suspension, the 300 Fourtrax uses an independent double wishbone system in front with 5.1″ of travel and a swingarm setup in the rear. 

The quad also has a 5° caster angle and 25 mm/0.98 inches trail length. For the 1996 300, It was later changed to 7° caster angle and 33 mm/1.26 inches trail length.

The suspension is adjustable and can be adjusted using three settings for the shock absorbers: soft, normal, and firm. The shocks can be adjusted manually or automatically using a switch and are controlled by a valve body and a spring.

Tires

Like many 4-wheelers, the Honda FourTrax 300 uses dual front wheels. There is a stock front wheel fitted with an AT 504 Ohtsu AT23 X 8-11 tire measuring 2.15 inches wide. It has an aspect ratio of 80 and a speed rating of R. 

The tire has a maximum load capacity of 910 lbs, maximum air pressure of 33 psi, and a maximum cold tire inflation pressure of 32 psi. The recommended tire pressure is 2.9 psi, and the least allowed when airing down is 2.5 psi; during summer, the max pressure at the tires is 3.3 psi.

The Honda FourTrax tires are mounted on aluminum rims. The tires have a tread pattern of 60/40, and they are rated for snow and ice. The tires are rated for speeds of 0-60 MPH and have a diameter of 17 inches.

Brakes

The Baja-Inspired Off-Road package adds single disc brakes for the front and rear wheels on the quad for additional power and control.

The FourTrax brakes are operated by a master cylinder and a hydraulic circuit. The brakes consist of a drum brake at each corner and a parking brake. A lever activates the parking brake and is located near the steering column.

Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 Problems and Solutions

While the Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 is an exceptional ATV, it does come with a couple of issues, such as:

  • Rear tire pressure sensor not working: The rear tire pressure sensors might not work properly on the Honda FourTrax. If you notice the tires are low while driving, you may have to check the tire pressures yourself. You can use a hand-held tire gauge to measure the air pressure.
  • Front-wheel bearing problem: If you notice that the front wheels are making noise while turning, you should replace the front wheel bearings.
  • Engine oil leak: There is a possibility of engine oil leaking out of the bottom of the engine compartment. To fix this issue, you need to remove the engine cover and look at the engine oil reservoir. If you find any leaks, you should immediately change the engine oil.
  •  Air filter clogged:  You can clean the air filter if it gets clogged.
  •  Brake fluid leak: To fix this issue, you should drain the brake fluid and flush the system with fresh fluid.
  • Clutch cable broke: If you notice that your clutch cable is broken, then you should replace it.
  • Transmission fluid leak: If you notice that transmission fluid is leaking out of the transmission, then you should drain the transmission fluid and flush the system.

Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 Price

The Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 was one of the first models produced in the 1980s by Honda. It was sold internationally in several variations, including a three-door Rancher in the US and Canada and a two-door Rancher in Australia. These models were produced until 1985, when the 300 four-door model replaced it. 

The second generation of the model, known as 300 ATC (All-Terrain Cycle), also went by TRX300. This version usually included additional accessories on top of a regular 4×4, such as an off-road tool kit, skid plate, and brush guard. Regardless of its name and packaging, both generations were similar from underneath their bodies. 

This means that parts are interchangeable among both models. The first Generation four-door model was produced from 1986 to 1996. 

Unlike other 4×4 models on the market then, such as Suzuki’s QuadRunner, Honda targeted different consumers: those who wanted a reliable workhorse for rough surfaces but needed to maintain acceptable looks for town use. 

Going by this standard, Honda hit the target spot with their 1986 300. It’s simple design — outlined by round headlights and vertical end caps — made it one.

So, how do you justify the price?

The Honda FourTrax 300 4×4 now goes from $265 to $3,545, depending on the modifications and the year. The 1996 to 2000 models cost approximately $3,000, and used models before 1990 should set you back at least $1.900.
