Polaris Sportsman 450 Common Problems

The Polaris Sportsman 450 is marketed as being a solid entry-level option, fitting into an accessible price range and power appropriate for the cost. But does this ATV live up to its reputation, or is it all a bunch of marketing? While we can’t answer this simply, instead we will go into some of its common problems so you can decide for yourself!

Polaris Sportsman 450 Build Issues

As an off-road vehicle intended for use in some rough conditions, issues with build quality are not a small thing. To reliably ride in the backcountry, an ATV needs solid composition consisting of high-quality, stress-tested parts. Unfortunately, many users report that the Sportsman 450 underperforms in this area.

A quick search will reveal plenty of customer complaints highlighting some of the faulty or cheap aspects of this bike’s build, ranging from issues with the bike shutting down or parts breaking on rides, to new models coming with faulty engine builds or other essential components like bad batteries or messed up brake lenses.

While on paper the Polaris Sportsman 450 should be a top performer for its price, with so many issues involving the basic aspects of the build quality, it is hard to pretend that the Sportsman 450 doesn’t have more than its share of issues.

Polaris Sportsman 450 Engine Issues

The last thing anyone actively seeks out is a vehicle reputed for its engine issues, and with its reputation for reliability, one wouldn’t expect Polaris to have these issues. Without a working engine, you may as well have no ATV at all! Engine problems may not be a constant for all users, but for some, it’s become a nagging problem, even for new models!

Polaris Sportsman 450 Warning Lights

Warning lights are never something you want to see pop up on the dash, but regardless of how we feel about them, they serve the crucial purpose of telling us when something has gone awry. That is if they are working as intended!

A common problem associated with the Sportsman 450 is that the warning lights have a tendency to turn on with no apparent cause. Not only does this clutter the dash and look unappealing, but it also prevents the user from receiving appropriate diagnostic feedback! That means something could be wrong, but you wouldn’t know due to the faulty lights!

The main reason thus would occur is because of the existence of faulty wiring or a loose connector near the power supply. This is not a huge concern, as it is easily and cheaply fixed, but does tend to play into our overall perception of the build quality.

Polaris Sportsman 450 Power Steering Issues

Have you ever had power steering give out on you? Whether in a car, truck, or ATV, the resulting experience will consist of you fruitlessly using all of your body’s strength just to make a simple turn. At lower speeds, resistance will make turning nearly impossible, and at high speeds, turning is too unreliable to be considered safe.

This issue was so serious that Polaris had to issue a recall specifically to address the loss of power steering, a move we are in full support of. After all, imagine losing the ability to properly steer while you are zipping down the trail. Scary at the least, and even dangerous.

Polaris Sportsman 450 Power Distribution

Finally, our last common problem for the Sportsman 450 is its unbalanced distribution of power between the front and back wheels. This uneven distribution results in an unbalanced ride that can be felt by the driver, so much that in bad cases it may even affect their ability on the trail.

This issue is most often caused by a faulty wheel speed sensor, intended to regulate the speeds of each tire. This fortunately can be replaced by a mechanic, but becomes yet another financial/maintenance burden you will have to bear as an owner of this ATV.

Conclusion

Polaris is a brand that wants to push themselves as a reliable and affordable option for the people, a target that they are often able to hit. The Polaris Sportsman 450 surely comes with its own downsides and issues, perhaps cutting it out as an option for some people, a decision we cannot disagree with.

But for some, the positive aspects of this bike may make it worth the time and extra love that it may occasionally need. Do you think the Sportsman 450 is worth it? Or has this bike reached your “Do not buy” zone? Whatever you decide, we wish you luck!
